PS -- having seen the frontrunners, here's my tip sheet:
4. Sinners was the early frontrunner, and could've run wire to wire if the fall/winter slate was weak. But that didn't happen. Will be hard to regain momentum.
3. Sentimental Value was red hot at Cannes. Having now seen it, it doesn't really live up to the Cannes hype and wasn't even as good as Trier's The Worst Person in the World (which tbf is really good). Not sure how this can win.
2. Hamnet is adapted from a beloved book. It delivers. It's emotional and resonant, propelled by phenomenal acting. It's a vibe. It builds to a crescendo. For perspective on tone: the director Chloe Zhao coached us through a meditation before we started the film. It's very, very different from...
1. One Battle After Another is a movie from a different planet. It is an instant and immediate all-time classic, and arguably enters the conersation for PTA's best film by virtue of grandiosity. There is so much going on here that is so good (directing, performances, cinematography, score, the list goes on) that my first thought after watching it was: I need to watch this movie again. Warning sign: it can be interpreted as very political, which could get it into trouble.
