This is one for the China watchers. It seems that just about everyone has parroted “China’s trade surplus exceeded $1T”. Except that number comes from China’s own customs. China watchers question China’s GDP numbers by default, why aren’t more questioning the veracity of the trade number? Just bc it could in theory be checked against the sums of other countries’ trade stats? Has anyone actually done that? Could China’s trade surplus/export be grossly inflated bc of its local govts’ efforts to make up exports?
